Dear Friends:

The Quad Cities Times published an article today reporting that a breast cancer patient has returned a wig given to her by the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  The patient, Joan Archer, was asked by Komen to say a few words at a celebrity media conference, but instead condemned the foundation for its support of Planned Parenthood.

A spokesperson for Komen told the press that the foundation "has not received any documented information" regarding the connection between abortion and breast cancer.

This is a patently dishonest statement.  Komen can't dodge the fact that any woman who aborts all pregnancies will be childless and unable to breastfeed her deceased fetuses.  Childnessness is well-recognized as a factor that significantly increases a woman's risk for the disease.  Moreover, many studies reveal that women who do little or no breastfeeding are at increased risk.

The cancer establishment agrees that the earlier a woman has a first full term pregnancy, the lower her risk for the disease is.  The woman who aborts the first of several pregnancies is in the unfortunate position of having increased her risk significantly.

Komen's partnership with Planned Parenthood has corrupted its judgment.

Kudos to Joan Archer!  Spread the word.

Sincerely,
Karen Malec

Woman returns gift, cites abortion beliefs
By Rachelle Treiber

Joan Archer was supposed to be one of the first recipients of a new wig given to under-served cancer patients by the Quad-Cities Susan G. Komen breast cancer affilitate.

But what began Thursday as a celebratory media conference announcing a program to help local women, turned unpleasant when Archer gave back her wig and questioned the foundation's affiliation with Planned Parenthood.

Holding literature printed from the Internet and citing a link between breast cancer and women who have had abortions, Archer said, she believes the Komen Foundation should have no connection to the organization, which operates clinics that perform abortions.

Representatives with the local Komen affiliate said the foundation is not supported by Planned Parenthood.

They said Archer was referring to a grant given to the Muscatine County (Iowa) Planned Parenthood Clinic, by the local Komen affiliate. The grant was specifically earmarked, officials said, to help fund a breast and cervical cancer early detection program administered through the clinic.

Judy McFarlin, Race for the Cure co-chairman, said regarding the connection Archer alleged between breast cancer and abortion, "At this point in time we have not received any documented information."

Also, the local affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation granted money to help support the administration and delivery of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program in Muscatine County.  The program is a Center for Disease Control program, but, in Muscatine County, is administered through Planned Parenthood.
