Dear Friends:
We are providing another avenue so that you can be an activist.
Please send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper(s) explaining that an organization of the National Academies of Science, the Institute of Medicine, listed "prior first trimester abortion" as "an immutable medical risk factor" for subsequent premature birth.
Explain that premature birth is associated with cerebral palsy for children and breast cancer for mothers. Cerebral palsy is a devastating condition associated with a number of problems, such as epilepsy, learning disabilities, mental retardation and other difficulties.
Be polite and explain that this risk impacts a large number of women and children yearly. The Guttmacher Institutes reported that 1.29 million abortions took place in 2002.
It's especially important to write the letter if your local journalists published earlier stories about:
1) The National Academies of Science report on premature birth, but didn't tell readers that "prior first trimester abortion" was listed as a risk factor for premature birth.
2) Billionaire Warren Buffet's $37 billion gift to the Gates Foundation. In your letter, ask why Messrs. Gates and Buffett continue to fund Planned Parenthood, given the fact that abortion increases the risks of cerebral palsy for children and breast cancer for mothers.
3) U.S. Representatives Henry Waxman and Carolyn Maloney and other Democrats on the U.S. House Government Reform Committee, who issued a report attacking crisis pregnancy centers for warning pregnant women about the risks of abortion (i.e. breast cancer, infertility and emotional harm).
Point out that the Democrats obviously haven't done their homework on the risks of abortion. If they really cared about women's and children's health, they would have thoroughly researched the risks of abortion, and they wouldn't have mounted the attack in the first place. Their attack on crisis pregnancy centers is about advancing THEIR ideology and the interests of the monied abortion lobby. The Democrats clearly have a bias for lack of what the scientific facts are.

Kay Ringelstetter, a physician assistant from Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, sent a letter to the Wisconsin State Journal last month. She informed the editor that the Institute of Medicine acknowledged an abortion-premature birth link on p. 519 of its report. Her letter and a letter to The Catholic Herald from Jeanne Breunig of Middleton, Wisconsin follow below.

ABORTION-BREAST CANCER NEWS HEADLINES
"Prior Abortion Affects Prematurity" Letter to the Wisconsin State Journal By Kay Ringelstetter, physician assistant - certified July 19, 2006
"Your sobering July 14 article on the rising rate of premature births failed to mention prior-induced abortion as a risk factor for preterm babies in subsequent pregnancies.
"Over 25 studies in peer reviewed medical journals have demonstrated a statistically significant increase in premature births in women with prior-induced abortions.
"The Institute of Medicine report cited in the article listed prior first trimester induced abortion as a risk factor."
"Abortion-Breast Cancer Link" Letter to The Catholic Herald By Jeanne Breunig, Middleton, Wisconsin Date not known
"My mother died of cancer in 1995, and my father died of cancer in 2003. Therefore, as one way to help others prevent cancer, I urge everyone to read the information on www.abortionbreastcancer.com. This Web site helps us know the truth about abortion-causing breast cancer.
"I talked to Madison Abortion Center abortionist Dennis Christensen when he left Planned Parenthood (for the day) recently, and he said our prayers for him probably won't hurt. What does hurt is not telling women about the abortion-breast cancer link.
"I write this in response to the July 6, 2006, Catholic Herald article, Page 3, about the American Cancer Society Relay for Life."
