Dear Friends:

Young women and teenaged girls are Barr Laboratories' guinea pigs.  Your action is needed now to stop this pharmaceutical company from exploiting our adolescent children and young women by making Plan B (the "morning-after pill") over-the-counter (OTC) available.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent a letter to Barr Laboratories on Monday asking them for a proposal to distribute the drug OTC.

Planned Parenthood is enthusiastic about OTC sales because the British experience shows that, by making the drug widely available, abortion sales increased (and so did sexually transmitted diseases, especially among adolescents). 

Planned Parenthood is not in the business of selling Plan B, so it can sell fewer abortions. When Plan B "fails" to prevent either conception or implantation, young women will seek surgical abortions.  Money is what drives this business.

The Breast Cancer Prevention Institute has warned that Plan B contains a very large dose of progestin, a synthetic progesterone. (Progesterone is a female hormone.)  If Plan B is used regularly, it may increase breast cancer risk.

Similarly, several websites encourage young women to take several doses of (estrogen plus progestin) oral contraceptives if they do not have access to Plan B. The World Health Organization classified these oral contraceptives as "Group 1" carcinogens in July, 2005.

The Breast Cancer Prevention Institute warns that estrogen and progesterone are "powerful steroids" that may raise breast cancer risk whether they are taken in the combined form or used alone.

YOUR ACTION IS NEEDED NOW!

1. Call the White House comment line at 1-202-456-1111 or send e-mail to: comments@whitehouse.gov, to let the president and his staff know that you do not want Plan B made available for over-the-counter sales.
