Dear Friends:
The British insurance magazine, The Actuary, published two letters in its December 2007 issue concerning Patrick Carroll's research [1,2] and his November article in that publication entitled, "The Breast Cancer Epidemic." [3]
Our readers will recall that Carroll had alerted insurance professionals about his findings showing that abortion is the "best predictor" of future breast cancer trends, and fertility is a secondary predictor of those trends. He urged insurance actuaries to prepare for a more than 50% increase in breast cancer cases in England and Wales by making adjustments to insurance premiums and corporate reserves.
In his letter to The Actuary entitled, "Abortion and Breast Cancer," Patrick McKay wisely observed that, "Two-thirds of all abortions are actually funded by the taxpayer - yet it will again be the taxpayer who picks up the NHS (National Health Service) tab for treating the breast cancer 'fallout.'"
Senior British actuary Peter Tompkins has two letters published in The Actuary. Only one letter entitled, "Matching Trend to Trend," pertains to Carroll's research.
Tompkins noted that a statistical correlation between abortion and breast cancer does not necessarily mean that a cause-effect relationship exists. Yet, he concluded his letter by saying that the question of a causal relationship is irrelevant to the work of insurance actuaries. When a correlation can be established between an exposure (abortion) and a disease (breast cancer), that is sufficient reason for insurance actuaries to make upwards adjustments to their pricing structures.
Tompkins, however, has little knowledge of the biological reasons for an abortion-breast cancer link [4], and he doesn't understand that cancer has a long latency period. In other words, it can take decades after exposure to a cancer-causing agent (i.e. radiation or cigarette smoking) before a tumor is large enough to be detected.
Tompkins inaccurately argues that cancer screenings may be responsible for the increase in breast cancer diagnoses. In fact, better screening only means that for every new small tumor found, there would be one less large tumor found.
