The
Senate voted on December 8 to reject
the Nelson-Hatch Amendment, which
would have banned the use of government funds to pay for abortions either
through a public option or private health insurance plans that offer
coverage for abortions.
Government
funding for abortion would cause the abortion rate to shoot
upwards. More abortions mean more dead
American women from breast cancer. Studies
published this year on women in Turkey and China report statistically
significant risk increases (66% and 17% respectively) for those who've
had abortions. [1,2] Dozens of epidemiological, biological and
experimental research conducted over the last 53 years support these
findings.
The
Nelson-Hatch
Amendment would have continued a ban on government funding
of abortion that was first enacted in 1977 with the passage of the Hyde
Amendment. Like the Hyde Amendment, the Nelson-Hatch Amendment did
not mean a ban abortion. Women
could still legally procure abortions, but they had to pay for their
abortions out of their own pockets. Taxpayers, like you, were not
required to pay for other women's abortions. The Senate vote on
December 8, therefore, was a vote for the most significant expansion of
abortion on demand since the Supreme Court's decision to make abortion
legally accessible in 1973 - Roe v. Wade.
But, the question of including a
ban on the use of government funds to subsidize abortions is not a dead
issue. On
the contrary, there is much work left to be done before a healthcare
reform bill can be finalized and enacted into law, and there is a great
deal that you can do
to help ensure that the will of the American people is not ignored in
Washington, D.C.
A
CNN poll reported that 61% oppose the use of federal funds to
pay for abortions and favor a ban on the use of public funds
for abortions. http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/11/18/abortion.poll/index.html
But,
even
though most American taxpayers do not want to be forced to pay for
other people's abortions, the U.S. Senate is folding under pressure
from Planned Parenthood and the abortion lobby, who expect taxpayers to
bail them out of their financial distress.
Please
join us to hear 70 respected, national leaders discuss the abortion
lobby's power grab.
Register
for this critically important, national webcast now!
Sincerely,
