Former Komen Adviser to Speak about Abortion-Cancer Link at Illinois Conference

The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer notes that a former Latina adviser and popular speaker for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Eve Sanchez Silver, will speak about the abortion-breast cancer (ABC) link at a statewide conference, Speak Out Illinois, on Sunday, January 16, 2005 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Oak Brook, Illinois.

Silver, a two-time breast cancer survivor, is a medical research analyst who has worked with researchers from Harvard and Fox Chase Cancer Center.

After reading a coalition press release, Silver learned for the first time about the ABC research. [1]  She felt horrified when she also learned that Komen gives money raised by "sneakered women" to Planned Parenthood (PP), the nation's largest abortion provider.

Komen justifies its gifts to PP by claiming the funds are earmarked for early detection and physician referral. However, Komen could have given the funds to real health facilities that are financially accountable. Colorado state auditers caught PP moving funds from the non-abortion side of its business to the abortion side several years ago.

"Komen's affinity for Planned Parenthood," said Karen Malec, president of the coalition, "makes it impossible for the breast cancer group to objectively evaluate research showing that an abortion leaves a woman with more cancer vulnerable cells than she had before she became pregnant.

"Scientists agree that little or no childbearing, insufficient breastfeeding, and delayed childbearing raise a woman's risk and account for at least one-half of the breast cancer cases," asserted Mrs. Malec. [2]  "If Komen and other cancer fundraising businesses had a sincere desire to cut breast cancer rates, they'd denounce PP for denying women the best means of preventing the disease."

Silver talks about "pink money organizations" - organizations that give money to PP and deny the ABC link.  She raises a legitimate question when she discusses pink money. She asks, "Is one hand is washing the other?"

The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer is an international women's organization founded to protect the health and save the lives of women by educating and providing information on abortion as a risk factor for breast cancer.
